Halifax Gate – Removal of Fuel Tanks and Asbestos Disposal Cell

April 15, 2026 — The Department of National Defence must decide whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this decision, the Department of National Defence is inviting comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. All comments received will be considered public. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website.

The Proposed Project

The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing a project. Valero Energy Corp will be conducting removal of remaining infrastructure on Department of National Defence property near 1350 Main Road, Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia. Removals include a harbourside tank farm, associated piping, and a closed asbestos disposal cell. The tank farm consists of four large fuel tanks, piping, and miscellaneous small support structures. The Asbestos Disposal Cell is approx. 80m by 55m, and contains roughly 6,000m³ of material. Work is expected to begin June 2026 and conclude Fall 2026.
