The Proposed Project
Previously, 5 Wing Goose Bay had a soccer field, but it has since been decommissioned due to location and poor condition. The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing to construct a new outdoor recreation area located adjacent and east of the Base Gymnasium (B399) including the addition of a new fenced soccer field, asphalt walking track, gravel parking area and trail connected to the perimeter of the existing ball field behind the Base Gymnasium. The new outdoor recreation area will provide users with the convenience to access the Gym facilities (i.e. lockers, bathrooms, showers, etc.).
The total estimated project area is 17,000 m², consisting of:
- 16,175 m² prepared surfaces for the soccer field and asphalt walking trail (~196.0m x ~83.0m ), including the installation of chain link fence around the perimeter of the field, and restoration/landscaping of additional area around the project site; and,
- 250 m² (~83.0m x ~3.0m ) gravel walking/access trail.
- 575 m² (~82.0m x ~7.0m ) gravel parking (30 spaces).
For the purpose of this EED, the Project is defined as the physical works related to the above components that are required for the completion of the Project, as defined herein and further defined in Section 2.1. The proposed Project is scheduled to be completed during the field season of the 2025-2026 fiscal year.
