The Proposed Project

Birch Narrows First Nation is proposing to construct a new solid waste transfer station complete with a two-bay maintenance building, diversion and storage bays for recyclable materials and hazardous waste (with secondary containment), and an elevated platform for transfer of household refuse into waste containers. Perimeter ditching will surround the site and will tie into existing drainage courses. The proposed project site is located approximately 600m south of the community. A 500 m long access road will also be constructed between the proposed transfer station and Highway 909.

Site preparation activities will include removal of vegetation and topsoil across the site extents. Construction activities will involve approximately 6.5 hectares of ground disturbance activities, including construction of the transfer pad area and access road. All anticipated waste generation from the construction activities will be responsibly handled and disposed of at designated off-reserve facilities.
