The Proposed Project

Vancouver Airport Authority is proposing to rehabilitate the steel piles that support the Approach Lighting Piers for Runways 08L and 08R at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Lighting Piers 08L and 08R extend from the western shoreline of Sea Island, providing lighting guidance to the north and south runways respectively. The proposed project will prolong the service life of the pier support structures which have extensive coating failure and localized corrosion. The scope of work consists of manual scraping of loose paint and corrosion from the support piles, application of a new coating, and installation of piling wrapping system. To repair corroded sections below the mud line, manual excavation using shovels will be completed at the base of each pile to a depth of 0.5 m below surface. All sediments will be replaced the same day, upon completion of the repairs.
