The Proposed Project
The Zagime Anishinabek are proposing to construct a new secure and supportive facility designed to provide temporary accommodation and essential services for at-risk youth. The proposed facility will be a commercial-style youth safe house with an estimated size of 8,543 square feet, designed to accommodate up to 16 residents at a time. The structure will include separate residential wings for male and female residents, private and shared sleeping areas, a communal kitchen and dining space, program rooms for counseling and skill building, administrative offices, and staff accommodations to ensure 24/7 supervision. The facility is expected to have an operational lifespan of 30 years or more, with ongoing maintenance and upgrades supported through designated funding streams.
The safe house will be situated within Zagime Anishinabek's Goose Lake area, requiring approximately one acre of land for the building footprint, parking, and outdoor recreational space. The project will utilize existing infrastructure in the area, including connections to municipal water, sewer lines, natural gas lines, power lines, and communication lines necessary for operational efficiency and connectivity.
Construction will be executed in stages, beginning with laying the foundation, followed by structural development and the installation of essential utilities. This phase also includes the interior and exterior finishes, ensuring that the construction meets all specified safety and functional standards. A designated waste bin will be placed on site to collect any solid waste generated during construction.
