Jetty NB Maintenance and Pile Cap Repairs- His Majesty's Canadian Halifax Dockyard, Canadian Forces Base Halifax

April 2, 2024 — The Department of National Defence must decide whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this decision, the Department of National Defence is inviting comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. The Proposed Project

The Department of National Defence (DND) is proposing to complete maintenance and repairs and pile cap repairs to Jetty NB at His Majesty's Canadian (HMC) Halifax Dockyard, Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Halifax. Maintenance and repair activities include the following:

  • Localized pile repairs consisting of welding steel to the piles to cover holes and deterioration.
  • Installation of anodes on piles and steel sheet pile wall
  • Timber bull-rail and curb replacement
  • Ladder and holdfast replacements
  • Mechanical systems – piping investigation and vent system
  • Electrical systems – investigation and repairs
  • Concrete repairs – jetty deck, exterior pollution skirt, and maintenance tunnels
  • Replace pipe supports.
  • Replacement sump system
  • Re-paint bollards

Pile cap repairs include the following:

  • Repair of Jetty NB Expansion Joint – This work would involve working from the top and underside of the deck and comprise removing the old expansion joint steel, restoring the expansion joint to the original design spacing, installing new stainless-steel nosing and cover plate on either side of the expansion joint, and foam backer rod and flexible joint sealant would be installed across the width of Jetty NB in the new expansion joint to provide a flexible and sealed joint.
  • Partial Demolition and Removal of the Concrete Deck and Pile Cap – This work would involve saw cutting into and around the batter pile group requiring repair from the top of the Jetty NB deck and demolishing the concrete deck and pile cap. This work would be done by working from the top of the Jetty NB deck and the underside of the Jetty NB deck on barges or floating work platforms.
  • Install Concrete Filled Steel Piles – This work would involve bringing pile driving equipment and a crane onto the deck of Jetty NB and comprise driving the piles into the existing seabed with specialized pile-driving equipment positioned on the top of the deck.
  • Restoration of Concrete Deck and Pile Cap – This work would involve working from the top and underside of the Jetty NB deck and comprise installing and supporting the formwork from the existing piles and/or suspended from the top and underside of the concrete deck to restore the deck structure.
