Notice of Intent to Make a Determination

James Smith Cree Nation Subdivision Stage 4 - Public Comments invited

March 12, 2024 - Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed James Smith Cree Nation Subdivision Stage 4, to be located on James Smith Cree Nation, is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

Proposed Project

James Smith Cree Nation is proposing to construct a new subdivision on the available land east of the existing core area within Sec 4-48-20-W2M.  The scope of work would include new sewer mains, water mains, hydrants, service connections, natural gas, primary power, street lights, roadway construction, culverts and approaches, erosion control and lot preparation.

Site preparation activities require topsoil stripping and stockpiling. Construction activities include:
1. Deep underground utilities (water and sewer mains) will be installed.
2A. Sewage pumping station construction.
2B. Water and sewer services installed to each lot.
3. Rough grading of road right of way, ditches and lot grading.
4. Shallow utilities (power, gas & telephone) will be installed.
5. Roadway construction, topsoil replacement and landscaping.
6. Street light and signage installation.

No decommissioning of existing infrastructure is required.
