Lac La Ronge Indian Band - Sucker River 156C Sewage Pumping System Upgrades - Public Comments invited

February 19, 2022 - Indigenous Services Canada must determine whether the proposed Lac La Ronge Indian Band - Sucker River 156C Sewage Pumping System Upgrades, to be located on Lac La Ronge Indian Band - Sucker River 156C, is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. To help inform this determination, Indigenous Services Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination.

Proposed Project

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is proposing sewage pumping system upgrades in the Sucker River 156C Community.  The sanitary sewer system in the community currently consists of a gravity sewer network which feeds into one of two sewage pumping stations (SPS). SPS No. 2 pumps sewage uphill into the gravity catchment area of SPS No. 1, which in turn pumps sewage to the community lagoon located to the North of the community on the opposite side of Highway 102. Both stations were constructed in 1995 and require similar upgrades.

The proposed repairs to both SPS No. 1 and SPS No. 2 include replacing the pumps with suitably sized explosion proof pumps, adding exhaust fans to the wet well, and constructing an electrical/generator room building extension to house the generator and all electrical and controls equipment. The new rooms will be isolated from the wet wells and therefore an ordinary location which does not require installed equipment to be explosion proof rated. Further repairs will be made to the pump stations to restore the existing building and process components to like-new condition and ensure continued safe and reliable operation of the community's sewage pumping system. The gravel pad will be extended out and new fencing installed. Minimal construction waste will be generated, which will be deposited in the existing local landfill located on the reserve.  No hazardous waste is expected to be generated by this project.
