Seabed Scour Protection Maintenance – Centerm Berth 6 – Public comments invited

September 5, 2023 – As part of its Project and Environmental Review process, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority must determine whether the proposed Seabed Scour Protection Maintenance – Centerm Berth 6, adjacent to 851 Centennial Road, Vancouver, BC is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this determination and a decision on whether or not to approve the proposed project, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online.  For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website. The proposed project

Centennial Expansion Partners proposes to remove high spots in the seabed riprap armament (scour protection) throughout Berth 6. A marine spud derrick equipped with a clamshell bucket and material barge would be used to remove individual large pieces of riprap that protrude above the design elevation of -15.5 metres chart datum, posing a navigation hazard.

The clamshell bucket would be used to remove the riprap within the targeted area. Removed riprap may be placed in suitable low spots within Berth 6 or placed onto a material barge for later offsite reuse. Smaller diameter riprap may be transported to the site on the material barge to fill existing voids that do not currently achieve the scour protection specifications or to fill voids and depressions created by riprap removal. The portions of riprap above the design elevation cover an approximate 20 square metres within the overall work area which extends approximately 95 metres by 15 metres. The works would be limited to the footprint of the rip rap armament placed at Berth 6 within the past two years.

The works are expected to be completed in approximately one week. In addition to standard port authority days and hours, work on Sundays and holidays may occur so that work can be conducted during periods when the berth is free of vessels.
