Neptune Berth 2 Dredge – Mitigative Depth Control – Public comments invited 

November 3, 2022 - As part of its Project and Environmental Review process, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority must determine whether the proposed Neptune Berth 2 Dredge – Mitigative Depth Control, located within the water lot fronting Neptune Bulk Terminals at 1001 Low Level Road, North Vancouver, BC is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. Written comments to be received by December 2, 2022. 

To help inform this determination and a decision on whether or not to approve the proposed project, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online.  For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website. In addition, your contact information may be shared with third parties, e.g., the tenant, other relevant agencies, to help respond to your questions and inform possible mitigations.

The proposed project 

Neptune Bulk Terminals Canada Ltd. is proposing to carry out riprap removal and dredging within the water lot fronting their terminal located at 1001 Low Level Road, North Vancouver, BC. The Project is required to re-establish required depths within Berth 2 from -13.2 Chart Datum to -14.6 Chart Datum.  

The Project will consist of removal of riprap scour protection at the existing pony sheetwall and dredging of sediment, as required. Approximately 260 cubic metres of material (riprap and sediment) will be removed using a barge mounted crane or excavator on a marine derrick with a clamshell bucket. Works will be carried out within an approximate 23 square metre footprint. Overdredging may be required, which would extend the dredge footprint up to 44 square metres and include removal of an additional 240 cubic metres of material. Removed material will be loaded onto a barge for disposal at an upland facility. Any removed sediment will be analytically tested prior to disposal. The ponywall may require cutting by divers to -15.0 m Chart Datum to suit ground after dredging.  

Project works are expected to take three to five days to complete and will be carried out during the fisheries least risk window for Burrard Inlet.
