Proposed Project

The proposed project will construct an approximately 11200 m2 community recreation centre including a gym, kitchen, multi-purpose rooms and cultural repository.

A large number of homes and community facilities were destroyed in the 2017 wildfire and since then the Ashcroft Indian Band has identified a community recreation facility as a priority, providing space for a wide variety of uses.

Currently, the Ashcroft Indian Band does not have a facility that is large enough for indoor gatherings and has no indoor recreation space of any sort.  This limits the ability of the community to improve overall health and wellness and to build community connections. The proposed centre would  blend community, recreation, and cultural uses into one facility. The community kitchen and freezer will enable the processing and storage of traditional fish/game. A cultural repository would provide space to display artifacts. On a broader level, the facility will enable the band to strengthen its Nlaka'pamux culture and strengthen relationships with surrounding municipalities and First Nations, and the people that live within these communities.

The project works will include:

  • a gymnasium;
  • a fitness room;
  • changerooms;
  • a community kitchen, freezer, storage and preparations areas;
  • a community gathering space;
  • classrooms and multi-purpose rooms;
  • a cultural repository for artifact display; and
  • all related works.

This Project will contribute to improved access to and/or increased quality of community, cultural, and/or recreational infrastructure.
