The Proposed Project

The Department of National Defence has determined the buildings and associated infrastructure at the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) 9 Wing Gander Careless Cove site have fallen into disrepair and pose a potential health and safety risk and are slated for demolition. The site was used by cadets as a survival training area and is located approximately 40 kilometers west of CFB 9 Wing Gander along Gander Lake at a Latitude 48°55'6" north and Longitude 54°56'40.1" west. The project will involve the demolition and off-site removal of all infrastructure including six buildings; main building (200 m2), generator shed (22 m2), boat shed (30 m2), bunk house No. 1 (125.5 m2) and bunk house No. 2 (218 m2); generator and associated aboveground fuel storage tank, light poles and associated electrical system as well as the decommissioning of a dug well. The buildings were constructed between 1980s and 1990s on concrete foundation consisting of wood frame and metal roof. A hazardous building material survey will be completed for each building prior to demolition and soil sampling will be conducted to determine potential surface and/or subsurface contamination at the site.
