Canadian Coast Guard Port Hardy Depot pier and float replacement

In progress

Project on Federal Lands

Summer window: July 1, 2020 – August 2021

The project is a joint work between Fisheries and Oceans Canada Real Property & Technical Support and Canadian Coast Guard's Oceans Protection Plan

Replace an existing, aging pier with a new larger structure comprised of four concrete floats. The construction of the larger dock is required to support the new logistics depot facility. Proposed activities at the site will involve the removal of the existing pier structure; installation of a new dock, upland abutment, and ramp (pre-fabricated ramp (~30m X 5m), and pre-cast concrete float (17m X 52m) as well as the installation of 8 steel pipe pilings (1067mm x 52mm)  to secure the floats to the sea bed

The proposed DFO dock will be located within the same general footprint of the existing dock, along the southwest shore of Jensen Cove.

The project will require infill to be placed within the marine environment (placed over approximately 2,098m2 of intertidal and shallow subtidal zones).  The new dock is intended to be a part of the permanent infrastructure of a DFO Oceans Protection Plan logistics depot, and will be maintained accordingly.

The abutment (33.9 m2) will support the landward end of the ramp. The abutment is mainly elevated which is above the higher high water mark (HHWL). Piles are below HHWL  0.81m2 and concrete is above HHWL. 16.07m2

The steel ramp will extend from the abutment to the float and will be elevated above the water. The ramp consists of galvanized steel and galvanized steel grating. The direct overwater portion of the ramp will be approximately 40 m x 4.4 m with a footprint 176 m2 The ramp is a vehicle ramp that may be used by Emergency vehicle(s), as well as Canadian Coast Guard pick-up trucks and/or ATVs for delivering equipment to the lifeboats and SAR vessels.

The concrete float (17mx52m) is a standard pre-fabricated float will connect to the ramp. The concrete float is a standard float designed and constructed for previous installations by Canadian Coast Guard and Small Craft Commercial Harbours.

Key equipment and machinery that will be used on site includes: pile driving/crane barge, material supply barge, support tugs, mobile concrete batching plant, concrete delivery/mixing trucks, lifting crane for handling of steel piles and sheet pile panels on the ground.

The site is located on the northwestern coast of BC on the southern side of Jensen Cove Port Hardy, BC
