Frontier Oil Sands Mine Project
Time Limit Extension
November 7, 2017 — The Governor in Council has approved a 240-day extension to the time limit for the conduct of the environmental assessment by the Joint Review Panel for the proposed Frontier Oil Sands Mine Project located near Fort McMurray, Alberta.
On September 13, 2017, the Joint Review Panel wrote a letter to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER), requesting a 240-day extension to complete the environmental assessment and submit its report.
The time limits established for the project are now as follows:
- The time limit for the Joint Review Panel to submit its report is 629 days (21 months) from the establishment of the Panel. As of November 7, the Joint Review Panel has 402 days remaining to complete its assessment and submit a report to the Minister and the AER.
- The time limit for the decision statement is 120 days (4 months) from the submission of the Joint Review Panel's report.
These time limits do not include the time the proponent, Teck Resources Limited will take to gather information required for the environmental assessment.

The Proposed Project
The Frontier Oil Sands Mine Project, proposed by Teck Resources Limited includes the construction, operation and reclamation of an oil sands surface mine with a production capacity of about 260,000 barrels per day of bitumen. The project is located in northeastern Alberta, approximately 110 km north of Fort McMurray. The project is a truck and shovel mine which includes one open pit, an ore preparation plant, a bitumen processing plant, tailings preparation and management facilities, cogeneration facilities, support utilities, disposal and storage areas, river water intake, a fish habitat compensation lake, bridge, roads, airfield and camp. If the project is approved, the proposed project would operate for 41 years.
