Keeyask Generation Project – Public Comments Invited

April 23, 2014 — The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency invites the public to comment on the Comprehensive Study Report for the Keeyask Generation Project, located in Manitoba.

The Comprehensive Study Report includes the Agency's conclusions and recommendations regarding the implementation of mitigation measures and whether or not the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

The Comprehensive Study Report and more information on this project are available on the Agency's website (Registry reference number 64144).

This is the final public comment period on the environmental assessment of this project. All comments received will be considered public.

The Minister of the Environment will take into consideration the Comprehensive Study Report, along with comments received from the public and Aboriginal groups, and issue an environmental assessment decision statement.

This project is being assessed using a science-based approach under the former Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

The Proposed Project

The Keeyask Generation Project consists of a 695-megawatt hydroelectric generating station at Gull Rapids (Keeyask) located on the lower Nelson River and associated transmission lines, approximately 180 kilometres northeast of Thompson, Manitoba. The project, as constructed and operated by the Keeyask Hydropower Limited Partnership, would consist of a powerhouse complex, a spillway, dams, dykes, access roads, borrow sources, a work camp, and supporting infrastructure. A 93 square kilometre reservoir would be created upstream of the principal structures, consisting of approximately 45 square kilometres of newly inundated lands. A transmission line would be developed, owned, and operated by Manitoba Hydro to provide construction power to the project site. Manitoba Hydro would also build three new transmission lines to transmit electricity to an existing converter station for use in Manitoba and export markets.
