Ajax Copper-Gold Mine Project – Federal Funding Allocated to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

OTTAWA – September 6, 2011 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has allocated a total of $32,225 to the three applicants to support their participation in the federal environmental assessment of the proposed Ajax Copper-Gold Mine Project in British Columbia.

The recipients are the Grasslands Conservation Council of British Columbia on behalf of the Kamloops Naturalist Club and the Kamloops District Fish and Game Association, Sharon Antoniak on behalf of the Kamloops Area Preservation Association, and Susan McGillivray.

This funding is allocated through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency and is intended to support public participation in upcoming steps of the comprehensive study process.

A funding review committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, was established to assess the funding requests. The Funding Review Committee's Report and the President's Funding Decision Report, along with further information on the project, is available on the Agency's web site, in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 11-03-62225.

KGHM Ajax Mining Inc. is proposing to develop the Ajax Mine Project, a copper-gold mine located partially within the city limits of Kamloops, British Columbia. The project has an expected lifespan of 23 years with a production capacity of up to 60,000 tonnes of mineral ore per day.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
