Labrador-Island Transmission Link Project – Federal Funding Allocated to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

OTTAWA – May 17, 2011 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has allocated $138,417 to three applicants to support their participation in the federal environmental assessment of the proposed Labrador-Island Transmission Link Project in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The funding recipients are the Newfoundland and Labrador Outfitters Association, the Grand Riverkeeper Labrador Inc. and the Labrador Straits Development Corporation.

This funding is allocated through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency and is being provided to assist the recipients’ participation in upcoming steps in the comprehensive study process, including the review of the comprehensive study report.

A funding review committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, was established to examine the request for funding for this project. The committee’s report, along with further information on the project, is available on the Agency’s Web site, in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 10-03-51746.

The Labrador-Island Transmission Link Project, as presented by the proponent, Nalcor Energy, involves the construction and operation of an approximately 1100-kilometre long transmission line and associated infrastructure within and between Labrador and the Island of Newfoundland.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
